As just mentioned, my next task is to disassemble the Wordpress theme I've chosen in order to tweak it to my whim.
On the recommendation of a friend, I've duly installed the tool Firebug - a firefox extension which allows you to inspect and debug elements of a web-page from within your browser. It looks ludicrously overpowered for what I'm trying to do, but hopefully it'll help - I'll let you know how I get on!
